There are three types of garlic. The first is common garlic, which is the white skinned variety and the silver skin variety used for braiding. The second type is the hard neck variety of garlic and the third type is elephant garlic.

  • Creole Garlic is silver skin garlic that matures late in the season is a variety from Central America. Creole Garlic is also grown in the Imperial Valley of California. Creole Garlic has adapted to heat and dry conditions, and does not do well in humid and coolers areas. It has a deep purple skin.
  • German Extra Hardy Garlic is hard neck garlic with a white outer parchment with red skin. This garlic is very vigorous and is resistant to temperate areas.
  • Roja Garlic is a common home garden type of garlic with brownish-red, medium sized bulbs.
